Cost and margin per size
Cost per ml or gram, packaging per size, margin at today's price, and the price that keeps your target.
Each pool's page has a Cost and margin section. It shows what every size costs you and what it earns at its current price in Shopify.
1. Set the cost
Enter what you Paid and what it was For, for example $250.00 for 100 ml. Carboy keeps the cost per unit: $2.50 per ml. Amounts are in your store's currency.
2. Add packaging per size
Each size gets a Packaging each amount: the vial or atomizer and label, the pouch or jar. A 5 ml atomizer and its label might come to $0.80. If you want your time in the cost, add it here too.
How the numbers are worked out
| Number | How |
|---|---|
| Cost of a size | cost per unit × size + packaging |
| Margin | price − cost, and as a percent of the price |
| Price that keeps your target | cost ÷ (1 − target), rounded up to the cent |
At $2.50 per ml, a 5 ml with $0.80 packaging costs 5 × $2.50 + $0.80 = $13.30. Priced at $19.00 it earns $5.70, a 30% margin. With the target at 60%, Carboy marks it and shows “$33.25 keeps 60%”.
The target margin
Set it in Settings under Pricing. It starts at 60%. Sizes earning less are marked on every pool, with the price that would bring them back to the target.
When the cost changes
When you receive stock, fill in Paid for it. Carboy averages the new cost with what's already in the pool, by amount. With 40 ml left at $2.50 per ml and 100 ml received for $230: (40 × $2.50 + $230) ÷ 140 ml = $2.36 per ml. If the pool was empty, the new cost replaces the old one.
Margins here are before payment fees, shipping and discounts. Prices are each variant's current price in Shopify. For setting prices from scratch, see How to price perfume decants.
