Set up many pools at once

Scan the catalog, check the amounts, create every pool at once.

Updated October 2, 20262 min read

If you sell dozens or hundreds of products in sizes, Set up many makes their pools in one go. Find it in Carboy's menu, or press Find my sized products on an empty Pools page.

1. Scan your catalog

Press Scan my catalog. Carboy asks Shopify for every variant of your active products in one bulk read, which usually takes under a minute. Draft and archived products are not included. Nothing in Shopify changes.

2. What it finds

A product is listed when at least two of its variants have different sizes Carboy can read, of the same kind: volume or weight. Products that already have a pool are left out. Variants without a readable size, like a sealed full bottle or a gift set, are shown as Not pooled and stay out. See How sizes are read.

3. Check the amounts

  • Stock location. Carboy picks the location most of these products are stocked at. If you have several, choose one. Every pool made in this round uses it.
  • Keep in reserve (%). Starts from your default in Settings, 2% unless you changed it, and is taken from each pool's amount. 2% of a 100 ml bottle is 2 ml.
  • On the shelf. Starts from your current Shopify stock: the largest amount any one size implies. If the 5 ml shows 11 and the 10 ml shows 4, that is 55 ml, because 11 × 5 ml is more than 4 × 10 ml. Check a few against the real bottle or sack before you create.
  • Products with no stock found are unticked. Enter an amount to include them. Every amount must be more than 0.

A product may note that some sizes aren't tracked or aren't stocked at the location yet. That's fine: Carboy turns tracking on and stocks them there when it writes.

4. Create

Press Create pools. Each pool is named after its product. Carboy writes the sizes to Shopify in the background, and pools show Writing to Shopify until they're done; a large catalog takes a minute or two.

If Shopify refuses a write, Carboy tries again after 1, 2, 4 and more minutes, up to an hour apart. After 8 failed tries it stops, and the pool shows Couldn't write to Shopify with the reason and a Try again button.

Good to know

  • Your plan sets how many pools you can have: 1 on Free, 25 on Starter. Carboy ticks the products that fit and tells you how many it found. See Plans, billing and uninstalling.
  • A scan older than a day can't be used, because stock has moved since. Scan again.
  • Added products since your last scan? Scan again. Products that already have a pool are skipped.
